Secluded above Occidental amid old-growth redwoods, Lancel Creek Vineyard, part of the late Ulises Valdez's celebrated portfolio, produces lean, layered wine rivaling Grand Cru Chablis, its fog-cooled site holding Brix and acidity in perfect tension. In 2017, Ulises and his crew beat a historic Labor Day heat wave by harvesting hours before daybreak, sparing the crop entirely. Despite its rugged setting, Lancel Creek is emerging as a New World rival to sophisticated Burgundian bottlings.
